FD Chapter 2: Due to an outbreak of fever

We slept in simple hammocks as we didn’t have beds, but we had comfortable sleep, probably because we were sleeping on the wooden deck of the wagon for a long time.

It seems like Eldena also slept comfortably, and as she came to the living room in a half-asleep state, she saw my face and “…please wait… don’t see me when I’m like this…” saying that, she rushed to the bathroom.

“Young master, Good morning, nya!”

Oonya, the cat maid, has already made preparations for breakfast in the first-floor living room.

Eldena returned after adjusting her dress and hair and we all had breakfast together. “For now, it’s better to check the surrounding area.”

As I said that while eating a sandwich, “Aah If that’s the case…”

Oonya took out a note and placed it on an empty spot on the dining table.

“I’ve briefly surveyed the area within one-kilometer radius just before daybreak, nya!”

On that note was information about the current situation of the surrounding area in extreme detail.

For this excellent job, both Eldena and I were impressed.

According to Oonya, this place is located at the slope of a mountain. In the surroundings, there were no sightings of any sort of dangerous creatures as of now.

But on the other side of the mountain peak, where not many people have entered, there appear to be a lot of wild animals to hunt.

“Eldena-sama, you can probably get some magic crystal ores that you were searching for over there.”

That means, both our goal of acquiring sufficient food and also Eldena’s goal of gathering magic crystals can be accomplished.

After finishing our breakfast, we started working on a nearby plot of farmland in the morning.

Hiding amidst the thick growth of weed, there were edible vegetables sporadically growing everywhere.

We started with clearing out the weeds using wind magic, tilling the soil by using a lot of magic spells, and disinfecting it under the sun.

“Certainly, magic is quite handy in this case, nya. Otherwise, it’d take up to three days, nya!”

While we went to dump the uprooted weeds on the mountain, Oonya was frequently displaying her concern. (T/N: she was probably being alert about any hidden dangers)

After sealing the doors and windows with magic, thereby prohibiting entry of anyone except us, we head out to the other side of the mountain.

Guessing that we could hunt, Eldena and I brought our bows, while Oonya wore a dagger around the waist while carrying a knapsack containing lunch boxes on her back.

After descending over to the other side of the mountain, there was a relatively large open plain.

While strolling, we thought to hunt rabbits that were there in large numbers but… “…sorry but…I’m not good at archery.”

As expected, Eldena couldn’t use it properly. However, just like that, Oonya rushed from the side and hunted down 4 rabbits with her dagger in a blink of an eye.

With such an amazing speed, both I and Eldena couldn’t help but be dumbfounded.

One month later…

Life in the forest is slow but unexpectedly going well.

We found some wood in other dilapidated houses that could be used to repair furniture and brought in other things like bookshelves and beds for personal use.

With this, everyone could arrange the stuff within the luggage that they brought along.

Although our research facility is simple, the equipment setup is just enough to handle simple potions. Given that there are lots of herbs available to prepare potions in the forest, there’s also no need to worry about ingredients as well.

Regarding hunting, both Eldena and I have improved in using the bow during this month and hence we could easily hunt animals like wild rabbits and foxes.

Once, we had to deal with a huge long-haired boar. We had used flame magic to defeat it (T/N: killed it, but the author used a softer tone in this case), but since it was located very deep in the forest, carrying it with us was really troublesome.

We have also checked for houses nearby that could be used for something else, so we tidied them and made them ready for use.

Somewhere within this abandoned town, we found a building that seemed to be an inn. It was a two-storied building with many rooms. Behind the inn, there was a stable like structure that could be used to keep both the horse and the wagon.

So we kept both our wagon and horse over there and even then, it had a lot of empty space.

As there was even a paved diversion to this place, it seemed like this place too had a lot of travelers visiting here. Thinking that I was deeply moved.

Regarding farming, we tried to grow some edible vegetables that we found in the forest but we need to wait and see for a while. They have yet to grow fully, but as of now, it seems they are growing just fine. Although there’s some time left for harvest, I’m looking forward to it.

At that time,

“Oi oi, it seems, we managed to meet earlier than I expected.”

Ogre Kuro came along with a caravan of merchants to this settlement to stop by.

Ever since we left Green Convent, we were desperate to make a living here so it felt like a really long time since we met each other.

Nonetheless, seeing that the stables and lodging facilities are already arranged, it’s not surprising that Kuro was surprised with that.

“I was worried about the accommodation but it seems we’ve been saved the trouble of thinking about that.”

Saying that Kuro laughed as lively as usual. Kuro brought food and other supplies for us.

He insisted not taking money for that but instead we let them stay for the night.

That night we all had a party.

Although every one of us only had meat, mushrooms, and vegetables brought from the forest, with Kuro’s wine, his goblin assistants were extremely pleased.

During the party, Kuro told me about a few things.

There’s a small town in the south which takes two days to travel from here. Although it seems like the inhabitants have already relocated, a notice was circulated, restricting my entry into that town.

To the north, there’s a settlement near the foot of the mountains, two days from here. It’s a relatively large village of demi-humans and it’s always bustling with traders, with prosperous trade. Even there, such notice was being circulated.

“If you are interested in going, how about we go together and let me introduce you?” Since Kuro said so, I decided to ask.

‘After all, trading with them is appealing and if everything goes smoothly, my medicines will sell well’ or so, I thought.

The next day, I, Eldena, and Oonya immediately set out on the horseback with Kuro. We proceeded for a while on the old highway without crossing the mountain, and midway, we took take the course from the middle to the forest. I followed along while marking directions in my homemade maps so that I don’t get lost even when there was no Kuro.

On the way, we rested outdoors for a night and then traveled for half a day until the forest opened up into a bustling village in front of our eyes.

The village is concealed by the trees surrounding it and the dog-men were on guard on the watchtowers surrounding this place. On our arrival, they seemed to have noticed and approached us.

“Yo, Googus, it’s been a while! It’s me! Kuro!”

“Ohh, is that you? It’s been a while right? How are you?”

It seems that they are already on good terms, laughing while hand-shaking each other.

Thanks to Kuro’s introduction, we were let into the village immediately upon reaching. Almost all people in this village are demi-humans and on the other hand, people like me, who belong to the ordinary human race, are rare, and hence, I received their attention. “To trade in this village, you need to approach the Village Administration.” Saying that Kuro walked on a route with familiarity which brought us towards a small hut being used as Village Administration office.

“Ohh, isn’t it Kuro san, it’s been a while!” “Oh, Aria, I hope you are fine too.”

Kuro introduced us to Aria, an ant-woman, who also works in the Administration Office. “They’re my acquaintances who live in the nearby forest. They want to trade with you so, can you help them with the formalities?”

“If it’s you introducing, there’s no problem. For now, can you fill up this form?”

Saying that I was handed over a form titled, ‘Trade application form for the village at the foot of Gorn Mountain’, and the entries within which were quite simple.

Firstly, there’s a name section to be filled, but since I’ve been disowned, I don’t have a surname… I’m worried about what to do when,

“Just the first name is enough. As this is a demi-human village, no one bothers about the surname.”

Saying that Kuro patted on my back.

Feeling relieved upon hearing his words, I filled just my name ‘Saphate’ and proceeded to fill the rest of the form.

“Saphate san, selling medicines, huh!?”

Having seen the information I’ve provided regarding the items for trade, Aria gave me a surprised look.

“It’s not a big deal, I just use some magic and handle potions.” Just as I said that,

“That’s perfect!” as soon as Aria replied, she held my hand and rushed out immediately.

According to Aria, this village has recently seen an increase in people suffering from high fever. The cause of this is unknown.

They wanted someone to sell a cure for this disease.

With her leading the way, we soon reached a small church at the end of this village.

Upon entering, about ten people were laying on futons lined up in rows and between them, a nun-like Owl woman was roaming all over with a pail of water.

“Aria-san, who are all these people? There are lots of people suffering from fever here, it’s dangerous!”

“I am here to treat them with my medicines. Probably, I can also use some simple healing magic to cure them.”

The owl-woman shown noticeable delight on her face and rushed over, when I said that.

Her name was Yome and she can make simple potions, so she continued to perform medical treatment while working as a nun in the church.

I casually checked the patients and it seems they are all suffering from high fever with visible red spots around the neck.

“Depa fever, isn’t it?”

“Yes, I too had the same thought.” Eldena agreed to my analysis.

[Depa fever]

When someone gets injured in the forest, a virus called Depa-virus can enter into the body through the wounds. It usually breeds within the rotten flesh.

It enters the body and reaches the lungs. From there, there’s a high risk of contagion through cough or droplets of saliva.

The infected person suffers from high fever and there’s a high chance of death.

With the medicine we brought, we enhanced it with disinfection magic and made the patients swallow them.

“Yome-san, you and others too must drink it. Even if there’s no other outbreak, you had been interacting with patients and have a high risk of infection.”

“Yeah, but… umm… how much does this medicine cost? … Everyone here is not really wealthy…”

“I don’t need any money. Right now, lives are in danger and I can’t leave them like that.” (e/n: this dude wants to sell medicines…? No wonder he was disowned. Father too much of a capitalist, son too much of a socialist.)

“Yo… Young master!? Is that all right, nya?”

Although it was Oonya who said that, while being surprised at my words, “Even though you say that, you have also swallowed the medicine, right?”

At my harsh words, Oonya couldn’t help but nod in return.

With the medicine starting to show effect, the patients’ body temperature returned to normal within a few hours.

Based on the information given by the demi-human patients, near the village, there seem to be a lot of carcasses of long-haired boar lying around. They ended up getting a fever while burying all of them.

For now, there’s no mistake in thinking that was the source of fever and hence, I instructed them to burn those carcasses instead of burying.

Immediately, on my instructions, Googus and his subordinate guards went to the place and incinerated them.

With this, the fever will probably stop.

This matter was immediately spread throughout the village.

We ended up using all the medicines we had brought to treat those patients in the church, so we planned to leave for our home immediately. But the villagers warmly welcomed us and hosted a party in the tavern that night.

At the center of the tavern, Oonya was having fun dancing with other villagers. “Miss, (T/N: Actual word used was Nee-chan) you look cool! How about, we date each other?”

“Nyah, Oonya always belongs to the young master, nya!”

While I was looking at her and enjoying her behavior,

“Thanks for your effort!”

Eldena approached me with food and passed it on to me.

You’ve worked hard.

Today, I was able to do something deserving of such a compliment. As of how I feel, right now, I am somewhat happy.

Today’s party went on without stopping at all.
